Cleaning And Hygiene Tips To Help Keep The Coronavirus Out Of Your Home

Can you catch the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) from food? How should I do laundry now? Mundane household tasks have turned into a source of uncertainty and anxiety as families grapple with getting the basics done all while keeping their loved ones safe and healthy. Widespread misinformation about the virus puts everyone at risk and adds to the stress of having to filter fact from fiction.

While research into the COVID-19 virus is ongoing, we know the virus is transmitted through direct contact with respiratory droplets of an infected person (through coughing and sneezing), and touching surfaces contaminated with the virus. The virus may survive on surfaces for a few hours up to several days. The good news? Simple disinfectants can kill it. Now, what does this mean for your home?

To give parents a helping hand, we compiled the latest expert information on what is known about COVID-19 and tips to help keep it out of your home.

Personal hygiene

Simple hygiene measures can help protect your family’s health and everyone else’s.

Don’t touch your face

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

Don’t cough or sneeze into your hands

Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or tissue when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of used tissue immediately.

Keep your distance

Maintain a distance of at least 1 meter (3 feet) from people who are coughing or sneezing.

Wash, wash, wash your hands

Yes, you’re hearing it everywhere, because it’s the best line of defense. Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20-30 seconds.

An easy way to time it with your children is by singing the full happy birthday song, twice.

Make sure to wash hands after you blow your nose, sneeze into a tissue, use the restroom, when you leave, and return to your home, before preparing or eating food, applying make-up, handling contact lenses, etc.

If using a hand sanitizer ensure that it contains at least 60 percent alcohol, ensure coverage on all parts of the hands, and rub hands together for 20-30 seconds until hands feel dry. If hands are visibly dirty, always wash hands with soap and water.

Did you know? Coldwater and warm water are equally effective at killing germs and viruses as long as you use soap and wash your hands the right way!

Cleaning around the home

Cleaning and disinfecting high-touch surfaces in your home regularly is an important precaution to lower the risk of infection.

1. Basic Protective Measures Against Coronavirus

2. Does your office fulfill the correct Occupational Hygiene Service requirements?

Follow cleaning product instructions for safe and effective use, including precautions you should take when applying the product, such as wearing gloves and making sure you have good ventilation.

Some national authorities have made lists of recommended products for use against the COVID-19 virus.

High-touch surfaces to clean and disinfect

Every home is different, but common high-touch surfaces include Door handles, tables, chairs, handrails, kitchen and bathroom surfaces, taps, toilets, light switches, mobile phones, computers, tablets, keyboards, remote controls, game controllers and favorite toys.

What to use to clean and disinfect

If a surface is dirty, first clean it with soap or detergent and water. Then use a disinfectant product containing alcohol (of around 70 percent) or bleach. Vinegar and other natural products are not recommended.

In many places, it can be difficult to find disinfectant sprays and wipes. In such cases, continue to clean with soap and water. Diluted household bleach solutions may also be used on some surfaces.

How to disinfect

It’s important not to wipe cleaning solutions off as soon as you’ve applied it to a surface. Many disinfectant products, such as wipes and sprays, need to stay wet on a surface for several minutes in order to be effective. Always read the directions to make sure you’re using the products as recommended and to avoid damaging sensitive items such as mobile phones and other electronic devices. Consider using wipeable covers for electronics.

Basic Protective Measures Against Coronavirus

Well, to most of you, Coronavirus is not a news term. You might have heard of it either through social or print media. Following the outbreak of this deadly COVID-19, more than 2,900 people have died of Coronavirus worldwide with a few cases having been reported in a few North Africa countries. As we speak now Kenya has never had even a single case of Coronavirus although we had a few suspected cases where tests were conducted and the outcome was negative.

So far in Africa these countries have recorded at least one case of Coronavirus as of 04 March 2020: Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia, Egypt and Algeria.

The Kenyan government has set up a Coronavirus isolation facility at Nairobi’s Mbagathi Hospital which is set to be complete on the 5th of March 2020 (Thursday).

“Mbagathi hospital which has been earmarked for use will be up and running on Thursday 5th for purposes of treating any infected persons,” Kenya’s Health Cabinet Secretary, Mutahi Kagwe said in a statement.

COVID-19 is still affecting most people in China with some outbreaks in other countries. Most people who become infected experience mild illness and recover, but it can be more severe for others.

Maintain social distancing

Maintain at least 1 meter (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.

Why? When someone coughs or sneezes they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain viruses. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease.

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth

Why? Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.

Always Practice respiratory hygiene

Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.

Why? Droplets spread the virus. By following good respiratory hygiene you protect the people around you from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19

If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early

Stay informed and follow the advice given by your healthcare provider

Are the air conditioning settings a war within your office environment? This article will help give an insight into the advantages of having air conditioning and will provide ammunition to individuals when fighting that war.

The Importance of Air Conditioning

Air conditioning helps to circulate and filter air, by removing pollutants and mold from the atmosphere. This will have a positive effect on allergy and asthma sufferers, who will be able to breathe easier whilst at the office. This only applies if the filters are kept clean and regular maintenance is carried out. A good air conditioning unit will help fight parasites and insects by catching them in the filters, acting like a desirable spider’s web.

How many times do office windows get left open accidentally at the end of the day? Air conditioning will negate the need for open windows and will therefore reduce the chance of opportunists breaking into your office.

How Often Should I Clean My Refrigerator? And How to Do it!

How long has it been since you cleaned your fridge? You can wait several months between deep-cleanings if you take a few simple steps to maintain a passable fridge for that long. Here’s how to clean the refrigerator and how often you should do it.

How Often Should I Clean My Fridge?

Never let your refrigerator reach a dismal state! Just stick to our recommended fridge cleaning schedule to keep your refrigerator looking good and smelling fresh.

Make it a habit to rinse off jam jars, salsa containers, ketchup bottles, and other items that tend to get grimy on the outside. This, in turn, helps keep your refrigerator clean. Also, wipe up spills right when they happen to prevent sticky spots from forming.

Once a Week

Scan the contents of the fridge and remove any old food on the verge of rotting. Is the milk a few days past its date? Are expired yogurt containers hiding in the back? Toss them before they start stinking up your fridge.

Every 2 Months

Leaving an open box of baking soda in the refrigerator is an effective, affordable method for absorbing odors. Write the date on the box, and stick it in an inconspicuous corner. Remember to check the date periodically—the odor-absorbing capabilities of baking soda diminish after about two months, so that’s how often you should replace it.

Every 3 to 4 Months

When the time comes to deep-clean the refrigerator, follow these steps to ensure you don’t miss anything important:

  • Empty the fridge of all its contents and purge anything old or that you’ll never use.
  • Take the crisper and meat drawers out.
  • Wipe down the shelves and interior walls of the fridge with a cloth dipped in warm soapy water.
  • Wash the drawers in the sink with warm water and dish soap.
  • Wipe everything down with a clean, damp rag to remove any lingering soap residue.
  • Dry all washed surfaces with a clean cloth and put everything back inside the fridge.
  • Remember to set a freshly opened box of baking soda on one of the shelves to keep those smells at bay!
  • Close the door, and wipe down the outside of the refrigerator with a soapy cloth. If you have a stainless steel appliance, remove fingerprints and grime with store-bought stainless steel spray.
